1: School-Specific Data and Compare Costs
The first tab in the School Travel Cost Calculator represents a cost comparison dashboard for various school siting scenarios. This dashboard presents an aggregate school-specific input box and a corresponding public and private cost estimated cost impact box.
For example, a school district professional considering various school site information may only have access to basic information around the number of school children that a site is intended to serve as well as the percentage of the school population that potentially would live within two miles of the school site. In addition to population and distribution of residences for a school, the number of school days in the district’s academic year and the tiering structure, or number of schools that a bus will serve on a given day, are necessary to estimate public and private school travel costs.
The remaining steps 2-5 in the School Travel Cost Calculator are estimated inputs for various school travel mode and cost elements that utilize the school inputs in step 1 and estimate the public and private costs presented in step 1. Thus, if a school district professional only had comparative data of the population and distribution of different sites within a region, they could estimate the differential upfront and annual costs by inputting different school site scenarios.
Correspondingly, steps 2-5 are optional and only necessary if a user wants to modify the existing inputs based on known or projected district specific information. Changes in the input values within steps 2-5 will require unlocking the protected document; there is no password on this excel file and thus users may freely modify or replace values as needed to best reflect their school’s specific situation.
2: (Optional) Transport Operations and Facility Information
The second step addresses the transportation operational and facility site information for the school.
